How to get licensed

    Meet the prerequisites

    Be at least 17 years old, Education equivalent to the completion of the second year of high school (10th grade). W.S. 33-7-209(a)(i): applicants must have graduated from an approved barber school or college, have an education equivalent to completing the second year of high school, and be at least seventeen (17) years of age.     Complete approved training

    Complete 1000 hours of training at a state-approved program. Board rules Chapter 8 (Course of Study) set two entry-level curricula: Barber (no chemicals) — 1,000 course hours; Barber Stylist (adds chemical waving, straightening, bleaching, tinting/coloring) — 1,250 course hours. Crossover courses for already-licensed practitioners: cosmetologist crossover 150 hours, hairstylist crossover 200 hours. W.S. 33-7-209 requires graduation from an approved barber school or college; no apprenticeship pathway exists in the statute or rules. Wyoming's separate Board of Barber Examiners shares offices and a website with the Board of Cosmetology (cosmetology.wyo.gov). [1]

    NIC Theory and Written-Practical Examinations (Barber Stylist)

    Pass the NIC Theory and Written-Practical Examinations (Barber Stylist). Barber Stylist candidates take the NIC theory and written-practical exams computer-based at testing centers around the state; after the Board approves the application, Prov emails scheduling and payment instructions. Computer-based exam fees are paid directly to Prov and are not published on the Board's pages, so fee is null. Retaking a failed phase costs $65 per the Board's fee rules. [2]

    NIC Hands-On Practical Examination (Barber, no chemicals)

    Pass the NIC Hands-On Practical Examination (Barber, no chemicals) (fee: $50). Barber (no chemicals) and instructor candidates take the NIC hands-on practical exam at the board office (2515 Warren Avenue, Suite 302, Cheyenne), by appointment only. The $50 hands-on practical exam fee accompanies the exam application (lowered from the former $125 combined exam fee when the Board moved theory exams to computer-based testing). [2]

The Board's exam applications require a $75 license fee with the application (money order or cashier's check); the license is issued after both exams are passed, with no separate issuance fee, so license is null. Personal license renewal is $75 annually (Board rules Chapter 3). Computer-based exam fees are paid separately to Prov.

Certificates of registration expire on July 1 following their issuance (W.S. 33-7-204(b)); the Board's renewal form states a $75 annual personal-license renewal fee with a $30 late fee after June 30. No continuing-education requirement for barbers appears in the statutes, Board rules, or renewal form, so ceHours is null. An expired certificate can be restored within 5 years by paying the restoration fee plus renewal fees; after more than 5 years out of practice the certificate cannot be renewed.

Reciprocity

Endorsement/reciprocity from another state is available.

W.S. 33-7-203: an applicant holding a current registered barber certificate from a state whose requirements meet or exceed Wyoming's may receive a certificate by endorsement without examination ($150 endorsement/reciprocity fee per Board rules). Applicants from states that do not require a board examination, or who did not graduate from a state-approved program, cannot obtain endorsement — but those who graduated from a barber school may receive a temporary permit to practice until the next board-scheduled examination. Out-of-state school graduates may alternatively apply by examination if their school hours equal or exceed Wyoming's requirements. No interstate barbering compact exists.
