How to get licensed

    Meet the prerequisites

    Be at least 17 years old, Graduate of an accredited high school, or equivalent, pass a criminal background check. The 17-year minimum age and high-school-diploma-or-equivalent standard are drawn from K.S.A. 65-1904b (the reciprocity/out-of-state licensure statute); the Board's practitioner license application does not separately restate a numeric age floor for original applicants, but does require proof of high school graduation (or GED) for all applicants. All applicants must disclose prior felony convictions and any professional disciplinary actions; nondisclosure is itself a disciplinable offense under K.S.A. 65-1908. [4]

    Complete approved training

    Complete 1000 hours of training at a state-approved program. 1,000 clock hours (increased from 650 hours effective July 1, 2009, per K.S.A. 65-1903) at a Kansas Board of Cosmetology-licensed school of cosmetology/esthetics. [1]

    Esthetician Written Examination

    Pass the Esthetician Written Examination (fee: $75). Written exam; 75% passing score required Ergometrics has administered all Kansas cosmetology-profession exams since July 1, 2013 (earlier vendors were NIC, Experior-Prometric, and others historically) — verified per this state's own exam history page rather than assumed. No separate license-issuance fee beyond the $60 application fee (which covers the initial 2-year license period per K.S.A. 65-1904(d)); the license is issued upon approval and exam passage. On-time renewal is $50; a $75 late fee applies after the expiration date, rising to $125 if submitted more than 6 months after expiration. K.S.A. 65-1904(d) sets statutory ceilings of $60 application / $60 renewal / $25 delinquent, but the Board's current renewal form charges $50/$75/$125 within that statutory framework.

Renewal & continuing education

Licenses renew on a biennial (2-year) basis per K.S.A. 65-1904(a). Kansas requires no continuing-education hours; instead, renewal requires passing a Board-administered written renewal exam (75% or better) covering Kansas cosmetology law, health/sanitation, and safety.

K.S.A. 65-1904b grants a Kansas esthetician license to an applicant who holds a current, active esthetician license from another state or jurisdiction, is at least 17 years old with a high-school diploma or equivalent (or has held the out-of-state license for 10+ years), and either passes the Kansas written and practical exam or has equivalent training hours plus the renewal-level written exam. Kansas enacted the Cosmetology Licensure Compact (HB 2069, signed April 8, 2025) as its 9th member state, but the compact's scope covers only the cosmetologist license classification — it does not extend to estheticians, so compacts is recorded empty for this occupation. The compact is also not yet operational in any member state.
