Complete approved training
Complete 600 hours of training at a state-approved program. New York does not license Esthetics through a cosmetology board or the Education Department/Office of the Professions — it is licensed directly by the NY Department of State, Division of Licensing Services, under the Appearance Enhancement license family. NY's own terminology calls the license 'Esthetics,' not 'Esthetician.' Requires a 600-hour approved course of study at a NYS-licensed school. Equivalent out-of-state or out-of-country schooling may be accepted with a school certificate, transcript of hours, and current certification of licensure/hours from the other jurisdiction's board (still requires passing NY's written and practical exams). Alternatively, 5 years of verified legal experience in an equivalent occupation (in or outside the US) can substitute for formal schooling, with sufficient documentation, and in that pathway the exams are waived.
