How to get licensed

    Complete the required training. Alaska licenses individuals directly as 'Mechanical Administrators' rather than licensing HVAC contractor businesses. The Residential HVAC category (the base individual tier) requires practical experience as a journeyman in residential HVAC work for at least 2 of the 4 years immediately preceding the application (12 AAC 39.322); a 'journeyman' must hold a Department of Labor certificate of fitness. A 'year of experience' is defined as 1,500 hours worked within a 12-consecutive-month period (12 AAC 39.950), so 2 years equates to roughly 3,000 hours of supervised journeyman work — no separate classroom training-hour count is published. The broader Unlimited HVAC/Sheet Metal category instead requires 4 of the preceding 6 years as a journeyman or field-superintendent, or a mechanical-engineering degree plus 1 of the preceding 3 years of practical experience (12 AAC 39.242).     Mechanical Administrator Examination

    Pass the Mechanical Administrator Examination (fee: $150). Open-book written exam; passing score of at least 70%, must be achieved within the 12 months preceding the license application An applicant may not retake the written examination more than three times within a 12-month period (12 AAC 39.033). The exam fee is paid directly to PSI and is separate from the $150 departmental application fee. [2]
