Within Journeyman, HVAC/R Unlimited (no size restrictions) is used here as the broadest, most representative HVAC classification; an HVAC/R Limited tier also exists, capped at 25 tons cooling / 500,000 Btu/h heating. The base requirement is 3 years (6,000 hours, since 1 verifiable year = 2,000 hours by OAC 158:50-1-2) of verifiable mechanical-trade experience under a licensed Mechanical Contractor. Approved vocational/associate's-degree education can substitute for part of this: e.g. a 1,000+ hour approved program substitutes for 2 years of the 3, so a formal program is not strictly required (approvedProgramRequired: false) -- pure on-the-job experience alone also qualifies.     Mechanical Journeyman Examination — HVAC/R Unlimited

    Pass the Mechanical Journeyman Examination — HVAC/R Unlimited (fee: $92). Computer-based testing by appointment at PSI centers in Oklahoma and nationwide Per the CIB's current PSI Candidate Information Bulletin (effective 12/18/2025), the fee is $92 per examination portion, non-refundable/non-transferable, charged for each attempt including retakes. First failure requires a 30-day wait before retesting; subsequent failures require 90 days. [2]

Journeyman total is $75 to apply ($50 license fee + $25 application fee, both due with the initial application). Renewal (every 36 months, alongside CE) is $75; a late fee brings a late Journeyman renewal to $100 total. Oklahoma does not have a blanket mechanical/HVAC reciprocity agreement with other states (a state-to-state reciprocity agreement does exist for plumbing with Arkansas, but not for mechanical/HVAC). However, under OAC 158:50-9-1, a current, good-standing out-of-state mechanical license in the same classification can itself satisfy the experience prong of Journeyman/Contractor qualification if it meets equivalent requirements -- applicants would still need to apply and, generally, pass the Oklahoma exam. HVAC has no known interstate licensing compact.
