    Complete approved training

    Complete 4000 hours of training. Wisconsin does not license individual field HVAC technicians who work for a registered contractor — employees of a Registered HVAC Contractor need no personal DSPS credential. The only individual credential is the 'HVAC Qualifier,' the person who qualifies a business's HVAC Contractor registration (Wis. Admin. Code SPS 305.71). To sit for the HVAC Qualifier exam an applicant must complete ONE of: (a) at least 1,000 hours/year for at least 4 years (4,000+ hours total) supervising or performing HVAC design, installation, servicing, or maintenance; (b) at least 4 years of attendance in a school of mechanical engineering or an accredited college/university/technical/vocational/apprenticeship school in an HVAC-related program; or (c) any combination of (a) and (b) totaling 4 years. Separately, any business (or sole proprietor) that installs or services HVAC equipment for others must register as an HVAC Contractor (SPS 305.70); work on one's own property/residence and existing-equipment servicing at facilities one owns are exempt.     HVAC Qualifier Examination

    Pass the HVAC Qualifier Examination (fee: $95). 4-hour open-book, computer-based exam; available only at Pearson VUE test centers in Eau Claire, Madison, Brookfield, Kenosha, Ashwaubenon, and Milwaukee Passing score is 70%. Per DSPS's HVAC Qualifier Exam Information page, allowed reference materials include Wis. Admin. Code SPS 320-325/341/345, the 2020 SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards Manual, 2013 ASHRAE Fundamentals, 2021 NFPA 54 (gas piping sections only), and the 2021 IBC/IECC/IMC/IFGC/IEBC with Wisconsin amendments. DSPS's general trades exam guidance (as of 2026) states the HVAC Qualifier exam is Pearson VUE-only and is no longer offered at DSPS in-house test locations. [2]
