How to get licensed

  1. 1

    Meet the prerequisites

Be at least 18 years old, 500-hour certificate/transcript from a state-licensed massage school (see training)., pass a criminal background check. OSBCB Form 321 requires: government-issued ID proving the applicant is at least 18; proof of current professional liability insurance; and a current OSBI (Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation) criminal history background report dated within 30 days of application, including name-based, sex offender, and Mary Rippy Violent Offender searches. A felony conviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant. [1]

  2. 2

    Complete approved training

Complete 500 hours of training at a state-approved program. OSBCB Form 321 (application for individual massage therapist license) requires a certificate or transcript of completion from a state-licensed massage school showing at least 500 hours of formal education in massage therapy. [1]

  3. 3

Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) or NCBTMB examination

Pass the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) or NCBTMB examination (fee: $265). OSBCB Form 321 requires a score report showing a passing score on either the MBLEx or the NCBTMB exam. The $265 figure is FSMTB's current published MBLEx fee (the more commonly used option), paid directly to FSMTB, not the Oklahoma board; the NCBTMB exam fee was not verified for this record. [1]

  4. 4

    Submit your application

Submit your application to Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering — Advisory Board on Massage Therapy with the $100 application fee. [2]

  5. 5

    Receive your license

Once your application is approved, Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering — Advisory Board on Massage Therapy issues your Massage Therapist License for Oklahoma.

OSBCB Form 321 lists a $100 fee for a standard Massage Therapist application (combined application/license fee — 'license' is null since there is no separate license-issuance fee) and $115 for the Reciprocity Massage Therapist option (out-of-state school/license). The board's licensing page states a $100 renewal fee for the 2-year license, plus a $10 late penalty and $10 duplicate-license fee.

Renewal & continuing education

Renew every 2 years. 10 continuing education hours required per cycle.

Licensees may choose to renew every 1 year or every 2 years. The standard 2-year cycle requires 10 continuing education hours (5 CEUs per licensing year); a 1-year renewal would require 5 CEUs for that year. CE may be in-person or distance learning, on massage therapy scope-of-practice topics or related business practices (CPR/First Aid training also qualifies).

Reciprocity

Endorsement/reciprocity from another state is available.

Applicants whose massage school certificate/transcript is from outside Oklahoma must select the Reciprocity option ($115 fee) and submit a certification/affidavit of records — a sealed legal document from the other state's board showing licensing history and hours completed (a copy of the current license is not accepted). Oklahoma is NOT a member of the Interstate Massage Compact (IMpact) — per massagecompact.org, Oklahoma has no IMpact legislation introduced as of this research.
