Meet the prerequisites
Be at least 18 years old, High school diploma or equivalent, pass a criminal background check. Applicants must affiliate with a broker who holds a Kansas real estate license before an original license can be issued; an original license cannot be issued on inactive status. All arrests, pending or convicted misdemeanor/felony charges, prior litigation related to real estate activity, and any professional-license discipline (in Kansas or elsewhere) must be disclosed and documented. Complete approved training
Complete 60 hours of training at a state-approved program. Applicants not already licensed in another state must complete a 60-hour total requirement: the 30-Hour Principles of Real Estate course and the 30-Hour Kansas Practice course. Applicants currently licensed in another state need only the 30-Hour Kansas Practice course. Applicants must be at least 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent before starting pre-license requirements. [1]

Salesperson National (General) Exam
Pass the Salesperson National (General) Exam (fee: $70). Exam authorization is sent only after completion of the 30-Hour Principles of Real Estate course. Not required for applicants using the currently-licensed-in-another-state pathway, who take only the state exam. [2]

Salesperson Kansas (State) Exam
Pass the Salesperson Kansas (State) Exam (fee: $70). A separate $16 fingerprinting fee applies when fingerprinting is completed at a Pearson VUE test center. [2]

Submit your application
Submit your application to Kansas Real Estate Commission (KREC) with the $85 application fee. Typical processing time: 7-10 business days after a complete license application is received. [1]

The $85 fee covers pre-licensure application processing plus fingerprinting. A separate $125 license application fee is paid when applying for salesperson licensure once pre-license requirements are complete; the two-year renewal fee is also $125. Exam fees ($70 per exam, paid to Pearson VUE) are separate. Fees for military spouses/former-member spouses are waived under 2025 HB 2280.
Renewal & continuing education
Renew every 2 years. 12 continuing education hours required per cycle.
Renewal is every two years, on the first day of the issuance month. Salespersons must complete 12 hours of continuing education to renew to active status, including at least 3 mandatory hours in the approved 'Kansas Required Core' course; the remaining 9 hours may be electives. CE must be completed at least 3 business days before license expiration to ensure timely reporting to KREC.
Reciprocity
Endorsement/reciprocity from another state is available.
Kansas has no blanket state-by-state reciprocity table; instead, K.S.A. 48-3406 provides a waiver of education and exam requirements for (a) military servicemembers/spouses who have held an out-of-state license with an equivalent scope of practice in the last two years, or (b) individuals establishing Kansas residency who have held an equivalent out-of-state license in active status for at least two years preceding application, provided there are no disqualifying criminal or disciplinary records. Applicants currently licensed in another state (who don't meet the K.S.A. 48-3406 waiver) still get a reduced 30-hour education requirement and are exempt from the national exam, but must pass the Kansas state exam and submit a license history certification from their home state.
