    Meet the prerequisites

    Be at least 18 years old, High school education or equivalency, plus the 75-hour prelicensure course., pass a criminal background check. All candidates must complete Live Scan electronic fingerprinting through the state's vendor, IDEMIA, for an FBI and state criminal history record check, scheduled after passing the state exam. The Commission must also be satisfied as to the applicant's honesty, trustworthiness, character and integrity; prior criminal convictions or current parole/probation may result in denial. Licensure is obtained through a sponsoring real estate broker. [5]

    Complete approved training

    Complete 75 hours of training at a state-approved program. 75-hour prelicensure course at a licensed school, available in both live remote and in-person formats. Applicant must also have a high school education or equivalency. [1]

    New Jersey Real Estate Salesperson License Examination

    Pass the New Jersey Real Estate Salesperson License Examination. Exam may be taken remotely or in person at a PSI test center. PSI's New Jersey program page does not publish a fixed dollar exam fee, so it is recorded as null rather than guessed. Candidates have one year from completing the 75-hour pre-licensure course to pass the exam and file a complete license application. [2]

Renewal & continuing education

New Jersey runs on a 2-year license cycle (current cycle 2025-2027, next renewal in 2027). 12 CE credit hours are required: 1 hour Fair Housing & NJ Law Against Discrimination, 1 hour Agency, 2 hours Ethics, 2 hours any Core topic, and 6 hours of any combination of Core and Elective topics. A $200 CE late fee applies if CE is not completed by the April 30 deadline preceding the June 30 renewal deadline.
